Background

Char-Broil is the leader in infrared grills.

The Urban is from the Quantum Series.  Its very similar to the larger magnum grills.  The major difference is that is has 2 burners instead of 3.

You’ve probably already know that there are different model numbers for what seems to be the same grill with only minor differences.

In reality, Char-Broil slightly modifies their grills for specific retailers so that each retailer appears to have unique models.  This is probably pretty good for Char Broil.

Knowing this allows you to make a better decision.  In my research I found that Amazon has all the features that other retailers have and some features they don’t.

Is this the right grill for you?

Although the Quantum grill is smaller than some, it’s big enough to easily feed your family and also take care of the occasional cookout.

This grill was designed to fit in small spaces.  The side tables fold up and down to maximize space when not in use.

How does it cook?

The real reason you buy a grill, right?  In a typical 2 burner grill, you’re limited by low BTU’s and lack of control over the heat.  With an infrared grill all of this changes.

Infrared technology has a tremendous impact on small grills.  Because each burner is significantly hotter and the heat radiates directly into the meat, even with a two burner grill, you’ll get excellent seared meats.

For those who feel you need a 4,5 or 6 burner grill to generate the heat you need, remember infrared generates much higher heat and a 2 burner infrared grill generates as much, if not more heat that a four burner traditional gas grill.

Remember you’ll also cook about twice as fast as regular grill and use about 30% less propane as well.  If you use you grill a lot that could save you $20-40 bucks a year in propane as well as a few trips to exchange the tank.

Accessories

If you like to use wood chips when you cook, you’ll find that the higher heat causes more smoke.  More smoke means more flavor.

It actually does have a warming rack, which is rare for this size grill.

Is clean up easy?

In reality, the infrared will do most of the work for you.  It heats up high enough to burn off anything that sticks to the grates.  It works kind of like the cleaning cycle on you inside oven.

To clean, simply heat to grill for a few minutes and anything that was left will turn to ash.  A few swipes with the grill brush and you’re done.  Periodically, just empty the bottom of the grill and you’ll have a perfectly clean grill.

Concerns

Infrared grills can take a little time to get used to.  Realize there is a slight learning curve.  As long as you are aware of this and are prepared to practice a bit, you’ll be fine with this grill.  It probably won’t even be an issue.

Char Broil Infrared Grills can be hard to put together.  Regarding assembly, its no fun putting anything together.  This grill is no exception. But to spend a little time once for assembly to save a good bit of money that comes with online purchases is worth it, I think.

Conclusion

When I first came across this grill I was hesitant because I thought any two burner grill would not give me the control and amount heat I needed to cook how I wanted.  After using it, I concluded I wouldn’t cook for 100 people for it, but to make a great steak for the family and a few friends it would work out great.  Using infrared, I think I could make a great steak with one burner.

If you have a limited space in your deck or yard or just want to save a few bucks over a larger grill, this grill and its infrared heating will serve you well for many years.
